It can be It can said that it is always easiest once you know how.
The same can be said for Linux installs – be they from a CD , DVD flash memory drive or in the case of smaller Linux distros even from a 1 mb diskette.
One of the problems that many encounter works out to changing the boot order of their computer. If you computer has been set to start fast by booting first from the hard drive and your install is from a cd or dvd rom you are out of luck. It is not as if windows is going to let you erase it when it is running.
How do you change the boot order
Well if possible you could wipe out the hard drive and if no OS is on the hard drive and the optical drive is set down the line as the next or 2nd next startup device then you might be ok
Generally you change the startup order in the bios of your computer
The bios is program which is permanently etched onto a read only memory on your motherboard
It controls how the computer starts up and in what sequence
When your computer starts look quickly on the bottom of the screen for instructions labeled – setup , controls or something like that
It usually will list the command as “del” or a function key
With fast new Pentium 4 computers the startup may be very rapid so read quickly and as well you may have to repeat the sequence more than once.
If not try various keystroke commands and function key combinations
Once into the bios look and hunt around for startup options or menu. It may be buried one level down even on startup options
Change the order so that CD or DVD is above ( starts before ) the hard drive
It can be diskette then cd/ dvd or cd/dvd first
Once done , save and exit ( usually F10 function key 10)
You cannot do too much harm in the bios
At the worst reset to factory defaults , save and your computer should always run
However note IBM computers PCs since they are first business machines often have a default start of “network” rather than diskette or CD.
At the worst if you are totally locked out of your bios , or a mean computer store ( to get you back for service) placed a password on the bios
> take the power cord out of the computer , (turned off of course) , remove the cover of the computer , and take out the bios backup battery which primarily looks like a watch battery.
Your bios will be reset back to original factory defaults. You will have to set the clock when the computer boots up.
You are now in a position where your computer will boot up from your optical drive and your can start and complete your Linux install.

Installation of a Linux distro onto the computer of your choice need not be a daunting task.
Installs can be done by any of a number of means . The most common currently is from a CD or DVD into an optical drive that can read it. For example if the install is larger one – then a dvd rather than CDRom might be used. DVD readers and burners can read both CDs and DVDs wheras the converse is not true. A Cd reader or burner can not read a DVD .
CDs hold 640 mb of capacity. This is equivalent to 640 old 1 mb capacity floppy discs. A DVD generally holds approx 4.4 gb ( 1000 mb ) of data. A DVD holds the equivalent data of almost 7 (seven ) CDs. It used to be that CDS were run of the mill and blank DVDs were a lot more expensive – both the blank and by equivalent capacity. However this is not the case now. A blank DVD is approx the cost of a CD. However DVDs are less durable and more easily scratch able. One little scratch on a DVD can mean a whole wasted exercise of doing the Linux install. Worse than that the failure from the media install disc can happen right at the end of the process – having you scratch your head at the wasted time.
CDs are more durable. However in the summer time just a little bit of deposited dirt or grime can cause the same Linux OS install failure as that of the DVD. The answer – simply wipe the CD clean with water – a bit of soap if necessary. Wash the CD clearly – especially the downwards side which is the side which gets read by the optical drive reader. Most important dry both sides of the media – but with a very soft towel or even sock. Do not use a paper towel or tissue. This may scratch the install media.

In addition when setting up the planning process of your future Linux system , its considerations and its install consider the environment that you are placing the new technological setup into. How will this system fit into your existing networking and technologies ? Will you have to connect to other systems such as Windows XP , Vista or 98 ? Will it have to share printers or other peripheals with those Microsoft Windows based systems or even Apple Macintosh ? Perhaps something as simple as printer sharing with Macs will weigh heavily into the marketing or purchase / install mix .

The question is seldom asked “What are you going to do with your new computer”. Instead it is often a description of hardware or in the case of Windows Vista does the computer or will the computer run adequetly or like “a slug” with the current hardware setup.

Windows 98 works with fat – fat 16 has a 2 gig size limit. Larger than that fat 32 format is used. The 98 stream – win 95, 98 , 98 second edition SE , Windows ME cannot read the newer NTSF file format system. NTSF has certain advantages over fat 32 . It can handle larger drive and drive partition sizes than fat32. It is descended from server technology and is considered safer from data loss and hard drive crashes and failure due to file format problems. Fat 32 is fairly standard but fragments a lot more than NTSF. Windows 98 and its stream cannot read a NTSF formatted drive at all and see it as no drive present wheras NTSF can read fat . The default install for XP is NTSF although fat32 is allowed both to be created or to left alone untouched. The current most advanced OS of Microsoft is Vista which demands NTSF file format.

A partition in the same no matter what programs or operations systems are located or installed on it. For example on multiboot - two or more operating systems such as Ubuntu Linux , Microsoft Vista and Windows XP can all be installed on the same computer – as long as they are on different partitions or segments of the hard drive , and if additional spaces – such as swap files if needed are provided. Of course there has to be some means at start up of choosing which operating system will start and usually a default setup as well. Most current Linux systems allow for such an interface especially when installed on a drive where Microsoft XP or Vista is already in place. This way the computer user /users can have their cake and eat it too. Of course adequate space must be allowed for the requirements of each different OS.
It does not matter what install system created the partitions – DOS with a Windows 98 startup disk , Windows XP 2000 , 98, 95 or XP or even Windows 7 or a Linux install setup. Its all the same for drive partitioning – all that matters is that the partitions are in place as well as being large enough.

A feature of PC – Compatible computer type hardware is that there can not be more than four (4) main partitions of the hard disk, but within these partitions or divisions there may be many more “logical partitions” which work in pretty much the same way and manners.
The upshot of this is that if you feel the need to organize your Linux system with many partitions , then you are free to do as you feel or wish. It is all personal preference. One reason why people sometimes do this is because a partition cannot overflow – that is there is a fixed limit to how much data a drive can take. On top of that in some operating systems the larger the drive the more space the same data will take on the hard drive. Smaller partitions can actually mean less storage space is used in full. Hence by creating partitions on the hard drive one can use a smaller less expensive hard drive or perhaps store more data on the same computer hard drive.
By putting data that is likely to grow in size on its very own partition you prevent it from getting to the point where in effect it takes over or limits the space needed at times as necessary for the operating system – virtual memory or room for updates.

Understanding Linux requires that you understand the role of hard drive “partitions”. In the world of Microsoft Windows windows runs on one partition ( division of the hard drive). There can be additional partitions – often to divide the drive – either for safety and storage or for different users. Or the drive may be partitioned in Windows due to limitations of the operating system in dealing with very large hard drives – for that OS’s generation , or to prevent hard drive crashes. Not so with Linux.
Linux needs at a a minimum two (2) sections of the hard drive in order to run at all. These sections are called “partitions” and are made before or during the installation. In terms of Microsoft operatins systems a partition will appear as a single drive letter on a hard drive. This setup or drive sequence lettering has its origins in the early PC systems of DOS. As an example a single disk with two partitions might have a C: drive and an E: drive. D: drive would be normally designated to the CD / DVD optical drive. As Windows is installed it sequentially names the drives it finds A – Z. The install process will find the C: first as windows is being installed on it, next the built in optical drive (CD / DVD / now current high tech Blue Ray drive). Hence the PC Dos system has provisions for 26 drives . This would include devices such as flash drive readers installed on the computer.

Here is a list of more additional Linux books ebooks and resources for the novice and starting Linux user or users. Most are resources and ebooks that are “free of charge”. Linux users are usually pretty good ,fair and honest as well. You may run across some dead links that are in error, you may run across some errors where the misinterpretation is made as the links are “free downloads” and not free at the source or the terms of use may have changed. Free to use – does not necessarily mean free in the world of Linux , its that the user is sharing the information or mods to you freely not necessarily free of charge.
It can be said in life that there is no such thing as a “free lunch” , “you get what you pay for “ and “nothing is for nothing”. Yet in the world of Linux its often free of charge or fair “beggarware”. If you cannot get it for “free” there are usually tons of places on the internet where you can get it at least for less expense. Still its always fair , that if you feel that you got very new value to make a paypal donation.
